In Loving Memory of Paul Douglas Givens

January 25, 1950 - December 4, 2017

Paul Douglas Givens was born on January 25, 1950, in Los Angeles, California. He was the middle child born to Robert and Mildred Givens. His parents and older brother, Robert, Jr. preceded him in death. He and Bobby always claimed that their younger sister, Emily, was from another planet.

Paul was interested in science and music as a child. He always requested an erector set for Christmas. He also began taking piano lessons and played quite well. He told his mother at 9 years old that he did not ever want to get married and he stayed true to that for the rest of his life. She told him that he definitely needed to learn to cook and clean.

He attended Avalon Gardens Elementary and was a member of the Boy Scouts and played Little League baseball. His dad got he and Bobby interested in classical music, which he still loved as an adult. He then went to Peary Junior High School and Gardena High School, where he became interested in training pigeons. He built pigeon cages in our backyard and his friends would come over what seemed like every day, lay back on the grass with their music, adult beverages (among other things) and enjoy watching the pigeons.

After high school, he attended the University of Albuquerque where he received a B.S. in Biology. He really enjoyed living in New Mexico and would always talk about his experiences.

Paul had a very colorful working experience. He worked at Charles Drew in the Vivarium (animal research) which was his favorite job, and the Youth Corp working with troubled youth. Paul also worked in various jobs in laboratory and product inspection in California and New Mexico. In later years, he served as a caregiver for his aging grandmother.

During the past ten years, Paul has enjoyed watching old television shows, such as Rifleman, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, Star Trek, Andy Griffith and listening to classical music. He also enjoyed hanging out with friends in the neighborhood. He always said, the ship is always safe in the harbor.

He leaves behind his sister, Emily, children, Fleeta (Carissa), Paul (Carla), Rashonda, Sylvester (Monica); uncle, Bennie (Sue), aunt, Gloria (Jesse), nieces: Courtney (baby niece), and Katrina; grandchildren: Raynisha, Darrien, Jaslyn, De Sean, Mailon, Aja, Isiah, Tyler, Isaac, Kholtyn Blayze, and Ava; great-grandchildren: Gerald, Katie, Liam, Loren, Leia and a host of relatives and friends.
