In Loving Memory of Mary F. Garner-Avery

June 12, 1943 - November 29, 2018

Mary Francey Garner-Avery was born June 12, 1943, to Jim King and Lois Griffin in Moultrie, Georgia; she was the oldest of two children.

She attended Moultrie High School. Mary was a very social and outgoing person. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized in Georgia. When she came to California, she joined the New Brighter Day Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. E. C. Bowdry. Mary was a faithful member for 20 years and served as a church Mother and a Prayer Warrior.

Mary met and married Cecil Avery, to this union seven children were born: Chel, Dessie, Regina, Mark, Darrin, Kenya, and Vincent. Mary and Cecil shared 56 years together.

Mary worked various jobs; she worked for the Los Angeles Unified School District for over 5 years as a Campus Aide; she also worked as a Social Worker for the County of Los Angeles for over 3 years, and for Frito-Lay for about three years. Mary loved education, and her jobs working with children.

Mary loved her family and enjoyed family gatherings, cooking, and taking trips; traveling was one of her favorite pastimes.

Those who preceded Mary in death were her husband Cecil Avery, parents Jim King and Lois Michaels, brother James Griffin, daughters: Chel Dunn, and Regina Avery; grandparent Dessie Ophela Williams, and a grandson Derome Harper.

Mary leaves to mourn her passing, children: Dessie Avery, Mark (Shelly) Avery, Darrin (Robin) Avery, Kenya Avery, and Vincent (Helen) Avery; fourteen grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and a dear friend/cousin Denise E. Reed. She also leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.
