In Loving Memory of Sara Jo Miller

February 16, 1936 - August 22, 2016

Ms. Sara Jo Bass was born February, 16, 1936 to the proud parents of the late Rev. Dr. Richard Hudson Bass and the late Mrs. Birdie Lee Bass of Waco Texas. Her Brother Rev. Dr. Edward B. Bass preceded her in death in January 2006. Sara (affectionately) called Ms. Sara by those who knew her best. She was an amazing cook, funny, kind, generous, intelligent, lovable and well-educated. But make no mistake, she would pull a scripture on you if you misbehaved in her presence and she never minced words.

She attended and graduated from Prairie View A&M University in Texas earning a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics later earning her teaching credentials and returning to school in her latter adult years earning her Master's Degree from U.C.L.A. in Los Angeles.

As a lifelong learner, educator and teacher for LAUSD and Lynwood Unified School Districts, she served for thirty years plus while thoroughly enjoying sharing her wisdom, knowledge and teaching expertise with students and others. Everything she did was done with high-standards and with excellence, she passed on these traits to her girls. Sara married her college sweetheart, Arthur Lee Tates; this union produced two beautiful daughters, Loyce V. Tates and Bridgette Y. Tates.

As a passionate seamstress who always made her own beautiful clothes, she shared her sewing expertise with her daughter, Loyce. They worked together for 16 plus years at Loyce's custom designer bridal boutique.

Sara also served faithfully as an active member under the leadership of the late Dr. Edward V. Hill at Mt Zion Missionary Baptist Church moving forward and following the call of God on her life to serve as a member of the Bible Covenant Church faithfully in South Gate. Her life, her work, mission and ministry can be summed up as caring deeply about others. Talk about a life well-lived she did it Gods way.

Processing and accepting Jesus as Lord and Savior, she recognized the voice and call of God early she was a Women of great faith and much prayer, walking, talking and living out the word in her daily life.

She is survived by her loving family, two adult daughters Mrs. Loyce Wheatley and her son-in-law Jon Wheatley, Ms. Bridgette Y. Lewis and her only grandson Daniel B. Harris, great-granddaughter Danielle C. Harris, the Bass family and a host of other relatives and friends in Los Angeles and Texas.
